Dutch Vehicle Lighting Rules: When to Use Which Lights
Dipped headlights, fog lights, daytime running lights, and high beams — when each is allowed and required in the Netherlands.
Knowing which lights to use is mandatory exam material — and not always obvious.
Daytime running lights (DRL)
Most modern cars have DRLs that come on automatically. They don't replace dipped headlights when visibility is reduced.
Dipped headlights (dimlicht)
- Required from dusk to dawn.
- Required whenever visibility is below about 200 metres (rain, fog, snow).
- Allowed in any conditions — there's no penalty for using them in daytime.
High beams (groot licht)
Only on unlit roads and only when you won't dazzle other road users — including oncoming traffic and vehicles you're approaching from behind.
Front fog lights
Only when visibility is below ~200 metres due to fog, heavy rain, or snow. Using them at other times is a fineable offence.
Rear fog light
Only when visibility is below ~50 metres due to fog or snow. Never with normal rain — the bright red glare blinds drivers behind you.
