Overtaking Rules in the Netherlands

When you may overtake, when you may not, and the special rules for overtaking cyclists, trucks, and on the right.

Overtaking (inhalen) is permitted on most Dutch roads — but with strict conditions.

The basics

  • Overtake on the left. Right-side overtaking is only allowed in queues or specific multi-lane situations.
  • You must be able to see far enough ahead to complete the move safely.
  • You must not force oncoming traffic to brake.

Where overtaking is forbidden

  • A solid white centre line between you and oncoming traffic.
  • Within 100 m of a level crossing, intersection or bridge in some cases.
  • Where a no-overtaking sign is posted (red car overtaking black car).

Cyclists, mopeds and tractors

You may cross a solid centre line to overtake a cyclist, moped or other slow vehicle — provided it's safe. Always leave at least 1 metre clearance when overtaking a cyclist.

Being overtaken

Don't accelerate. Stay in your lane. If you're holding up a queue on a single-lane road, pull over at the first safe spot.
