CBR Exam in the Netherlands (English Version): Step-by-Step

How to book, prepare for, and pass the CBR exam in the Netherlands in English. Locations, languages, pricing, and a study plan that works.

Taking the CBR exam in the Netherlands in English is straightforward — once you know the process. This is the step-by-step guide we wish we'd had when we started.

Step 1: Get your DigiD

You can only book a CBR exam through MijnCBR, which requires a DigiD login. If you're a registered resident with a BSN, request a DigiD at digid.nl. It takes a few days to arrive by post.

Step 2: Pick the right exam and language

  • Choose 'Theorie-examen B' (theory exam for cars).
  • Set the exam language to English.
  • Pick a CBR location near you — exam halls exist in most major cities.
  • Pay the fee (€41 currently).

Step 3: Study the right material

The CBR examines the Dutch Road Traffic Regulation (RVV 1990). Any practice tool you use should be based on those regulations — not a generic 'European driving rules' summary. Pay extra attention to areas that work differently than in your home country: cyclist priority, roundabout exit signals, shark-tooth markings, and motorway speed-limit time windows.

Step 4: Take mock exams

Do at least three full timed mock exams before the real thing. Treat them like the real exam: no phone, no notes, full 30 minutes. If you can hit 80% twice in a row, you're ready.

Step 5: Exam day

  • Bring your passport or ID card. No ID = no exam, no refund.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. The CBR is strict about timing.
  • You'll get a short headset-based instruction in English before the test starts.
  • Results are on screen the moment you finish.

Step 6: Book your practical lessons

Your theory certificate is valid for 18 months. Most learners start practical lessons in parallel with theory study so they're ready to take the road exam soon after passing theory.
