Understand Dutch vehicle lighting rules for the theory exam

When must you use lights while driving in the Netherlands?

Dutch drivers must use dipped beam headlights (dimlicht) whenever it is dark or visibility is otherwise poor, such as in heavy rain or fog. Daytime running lights (dagrijverlichting) may switch on automatically in daylight, but they are not a substitute for dipped beam once conditions worsen.

Main beam (grootlicht) gives better forward visibility but must be dipped in good time for oncoming traffic and for vehicles you are following, to avoid dazzling other drivers. Front and rear fog lights have their own separate visibility thresholds and are not meant for everyday use.

Beyond the basic headlight rules, the theory exam also covers parking lights, hazard lights, tunnel lighting, and the lighting obligations for trailers and bicycles, since all of these appear regularly in real driving situations.

What you need to understand

Dipped beam in darkness and poor visibility

Dipped beam is required whenever it is dark or visibility is otherwise reduced, such as in rain, mist or twilight. It remains the standard light for ordinary driving conditions.

Daytime running lights are not enough by themselves

Daytime running lights work well in clear daylight but usually illuminate less than dipped beam and do not always include rear lights, so you must switch to dipped beam once conditions worsen.

Main beam and dazzling other drivers

Main beam gives extra range on dark, unlit roads, but must be dipped in good time before oncoming traffic and before you catch up with a vehicle ahead, to avoid dazzling other drivers.

Front fog lights

Front fog lights may be used when visibility drops to roughly 200 metres or less, giving a wider, lower beam that cuts through fog or heavy rain better than dipped beam alone.

Rear fog light has a stricter threshold

The rear fog light should only be switched on when visibility falls to around 50 metres or less, since its intensity can dazzle following traffic if used too soon.

Parking lights are not for driving

Stadslicht

Parking lights (stadslicht) may be used while a vehicle is stationary at the kerb in certain conditions, but they do not provide enough illumination or visibility for actually driving.

Hazard lights for breakdowns and warnings

Hazard lights are used when a vehicle has broken down, is obstructing traffic, or to warn following traffic of a sudden queue or danger ahead, such as on a motorway.

Lighting inside tunnels

Signs at tunnel entrances generally require dipped beam to be switched on for the length of the tunnel, even during the day, regardless of daytime running lights already being on.

Trailers and bicycles need their own lights

A trailer must show its own rear lights and reflectors matching the towing vehicle, and a bicycle used after dark needs a white or yellow front light and a red rear light.

Use this five-step lighting check

    Switch on dipped beam for tunnels and check that a trailer's own lights and reflectors are working.

  • Relying on daytime running lights after dark

    Daytime running lights are designed for clear daylight and often lack rear illumination, so dipped beam is still required once it grows dark.

  • Leaving main beam on for oncoming traffic

    Failing to dip in good time can dazzle oncoming drivers and briefly blind them, creating a real safety risk rather than just a rule violation.

  • Switching on the rear fog light too early

    Using the rear fog light before visibility genuinely drops to around 50 metres can dazzle following traffic and hide your brake lights.

  • Treating parking lights as sufficient for driving

    Parking lights are meant for a stationary vehicle in specific conditions, not for actually driving, since they provide far less illumination.

  • Forgetting dipped beam inside tunnels

    Even with daytime running lights active, signs at tunnel entrances generally require dipped beam headlights for the full length of the tunnel.

  • Ignoring trailer lighting before a journey

    A trailer with faulty or missing rear lights is both an offence and a real hazard, since following traffic relies on it to judge your vehicle's length and braking.

  • Not using hazard lights to warn of a sudden queue

    On motorways especially, switching on hazard lights briefly to warn traffic behind you of a sudden slowdown can prevent a rear-end collision.

Scenario 1 — Driving into thickening fog

Situation
You are driving on a rural road as fog rolls in, and you estimate you can now see only about 40 metres ahead of you.
What to inspect first
Judge the current visibility distance before deciding which lights beyond dipped beam are appropriate.
Correct action
Switch on both front and rear fog lights, since visibility has fallen below the roughly 50-metre threshold for the rear fog light.
